Beeswax Lip Balm

Once upon a time, I had a favorite lip balm made by a well-known health-conscious brand.

And I could never be without that lip balm. I have to admit that I was rather addicted to it!

I put it on first thing in the morning and right before going to bed at night.

Whenever I saw it on sale (which was rare), I would stock up on the lip balm because I knew I could never, neverlive without it.

I loved it so much that I even tucked it into my children’s stockings at Christmas and added it to gift baskets for friends.

But then one day I wondered: What would happen if they stopped making it? How could I live without it?

And then I knew that I needed to be free from this reliance on a company. And, I wanted to be certain that the ingredients were all-natural and healthy.

I needed to learn how to make my own lip balm. After all, I had alreadymade my own natural deodorant,my own toothpaste, andmy own sunscreen. Why not make my own beeswax lip balm?

And so this recipe was born, and it was a success, and I’ve never looked back!

Beeswax Lip Balm Notes

  • You can pour the finished lip balm into lip balm tubes or other lip balm containers like small jars or tins.
  • If your lip balm mixture starts to harden too fast while you’re pouring it into the containers, you can re-melt it and then try pouring it again.
  • To clean your melting pot, jar, or whatever you used to melt the ingredients in, put the pot back in the double boiler, heat it, and then wipe it out with a paper towel.
  • You can make your own double boiler by adding water to a saucepan and putting a glass bowl, mason jar, or a wax melting pitcher (that’s what I use) into the water.
  • Feel free to add more or fewer drops of essential oil.
  • If you only want to make 6 tubes of lip balm, it’s easy to half the recipe. Just half all of the amounts and you’ll get enough to fill 6 lip balm tubes.
  • Beeswax pellets are easiest to use, but you can also use a block of beeswax.

Supplies Needed for This Recipe

  • Double boileror homemade double boiler (I use mywax melting pitcher that I also use for candle making)
  • Wooden skewer or other item to stir the melted wax mixture (the skewer is nice because you can just throw it away when you’re done—or wipe it off if you want to use it again)
  • Lip balm tubesor lip balm tins

Ingredients

The full ingredient list and instructions are found below in the printable recipe card.

  • Coconut oil
  • Beeswax(You can use white or yellow beeswax)
  • Cocoa butter
  • Essential oils: Pick your favorite essential oil or a combination of oils—my favorite is just plainpeppermint! Lavender essential oil is also nice.
  • Castor oil (optional—sometimes I add this and sometimes I don’t—I usually just make it plain, without the castor oil)

How to Make This Beeswax Lip Balm Recipe

  1. Set up your workspace. I like to line a cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper and set all of the lip balm tubes huddled together, lids off. This makes it easier to pour the lip balm mixture into the containers quickly.
  2. Heat about 2 cups of water in the bottom of a double boiler on medium to medium-high heat. You can make your own double boiler by adding water to a saucepan and putting a glass bowl, mason jar, or wax melting pitcher (that’s what I use) into the water.
  3. Add beeswax, cocoa butter, and coconut oil to the top part of the double boiler and heat until melted. Use a wooden skewer or popsicle stick to stir.
  4. After it’s melted, remove double boiler from heat and add the peppermint oil, stirring to combine.
  5. Pour lip balm mixture quickly into lip balm containers. It starts to harden quickly, so you need to work fast.
  6. Allow to cool at room temperature and harden fully, then add lids to the containers. Enjoy your homemade lip balm!

I make my own double boiler by adding water to a saucepan and setting my wax melting pitcher inside. I use a wooden skewer to stir.

Melt the ingredients in the double boiler.

Quickly fill the lip balm tubes with the mixture.

As the lip balm mixture cools, it will shrink down into the container. Also, I accidentally spilled some in this batch. All you have to do is peel up the spilled mixture from the parchment paper and you can use it just the way it is. Or, you could also re-melt it and top off the lip balm tubes with it.

After the shrinkage occurs, you can pour more melted wax on top of it so that it comes to the top of the container.

Now the containers have fully set up and hardened, and they are ready for the lids.

Optional Add-Ins

Usually I just make the plain beeswax lip balm recipe with coconut oil, pure beeswax, cocoa butter, and peppermint essential oil, but occasionally I add other ingredients.

Castor Oil: You can add castor oil, which is protective and is supposed to prevent dryness.

Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil is said to protect and nourish the lips.

Shea Butter: Shea butter can be used in place of the cocoa butter.

Mango Butter: This is another ingredient that is nourishing to the lips and can be substituted in place of the cocoa butter.

Lavender Essential Oil: Use this essential oil in place of or in conjunction with the peppermint oil.

Servings: 12 Lip Balm Tubes

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp beeswax
  • 2 tbsp cocoa butter
  • 12 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions

  • Set up your workspace. I like to line a cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper and set all of the lip balm tubes huddled together, lids off. This makes it easier to pour the lip balm mixture into the containers quickly.

  • Heat about 2 cups of water in the bottom of a double boiler on medium to medium-high heat. (You can make your own double boiler by adding water to a saucepan and putting a glass bowl, mason jar, or wax melting pitcher (that's what I use) into the water.

  • Add coconut oil, beeswax, and cocoa butter to the top part of the double boiler and heat until melted. Use a wooden skewer or popsicle stick to stir.

  • After it's melted, remove double boiler from heat and add the peppermint oil, stirring to combine.

  • Pour lip balm mixture quickly into lip balm containers. It starts to harden quickly, so you need to work fast.

  • Usually the lip balm mixture will sink down a bit in the center. If this happens, simply pour more on top until it's even with the top of the lip balm tube.

  • Allow to cool at room temperature and harden fully, then add lids to the containers.

Notes

If you'd like to add other ingredients, like castor oil, here's the ingredient list I use for that (the instructions are the same as above) to make 12 lip balm tubes:

2 1/2 tbsp. coconut oil

1/2 tbsp castor oil

1 tbsp beeswax

1 tbsp cocoa butter

15 drops peppermint essential oil

This makes a slightly less-firm lip balm than just using the above ingredients.
